I prefer the well crafted sample library approach rather than having 100 gigabytes of round-robin multisampled kontakt libraries. Right now I am using the GeneralUserGS soundfont by S Christian Collins, which sounds and feels surprisingly good despite how lo-fi it is.

Price - Ideally around or below the $1000 range.

Quality - Should at least sound as good as cheesy 90s romplers.

Variety - Keyboards, Guitars, Drums, some assortment of Ensemble & Solo Instruments.

Dynamics - Instruments designed to feel natural for keyboard playing.

This is my checklist, in order of descending importance: Big emphasis on playability here, because I’ve messed around with a various commercial plugins but couldn’t find anything that meets my needs while being well tuned for keyboard playing. I’m looking for decent quality, playable, acoustic instruments, which I haven’t been able to get from freeware. I am a keyboardist with experience producing mostly electronic music, and I want to make a purchase to expand my instrument library. I know for myself that some days I respond to things differently than others. ZULU - don't fret about the dynamics of some of our interactions. I've always been curious if RTAS softsyths are limited by protools use of one processor where perhaps non RTAS apps like reason are not. I find reason to use fewer resources on my DP machine. I'm thinking the decision is more along the lines of how you wish to work and if you want to build your sample library beyond what is in each package.

If your in New York and want to go through Reason without paying for the retail version let me know and we could set something up. That's a real time saver and easier to use. I think Sampletank affords one a certain luxury of the instant module directly within the app. I like the synths alot and the mixer as well as the reverb.

By accident I hit the mod wheel and realized that it affected the filter and I then got the sound I wanted. My mod wheel was in the middle and I didn't like the sound of the piano.

One thing about alot of the patches that come with the full version is that the mod wheel on my keyboard was set to the filter of the sampler. If you haven't read up on it then It may seem stranger than it is.

The manual puts the whole thing in perspective which made it easy for me. The full version is much better but if you really hated the free version you may not like it.
